Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from WA!

Jack Bochsler

Bob, Jerry and the rest of the Comms Team:

[If you think this as spam, please delete. As I know more than a few of you, this seemed the most expedient way to send.]

I hope that you are well and had wonderful holidays with family and friends. I apologize for the late well wishes.

Joanne and I completed our move to Ronald, WA, arriving May 5, cats intact. We have since been working on integrating with our new life here - unpacking, house projects and more importantly, finding our place in our new community. We had a wonderfully glorious summer - shorts in May, hiking lower altitudes soon after arrival and pushing further and further up the mountains as the snow retreated. The upper trails started shutting down again due to snow in late October, the last trail 'hike' was in mid November on trails that should have been closed a month prior. I am not complaining - I have managed to hike over 26 unique trails this year, some favorite trails have been hiked 4+ times, so I have kept busy. During the summer I was normally on the trail 3-4 times at 35-45 miles per week, I hiked every mile of trail in our valley this year, and am now expanding to adjacent areas. I work with a NFS Ranger and send him trail maintenance reports for all the trails I cover. There is around 1000 miles of trail with trailheads within 90 minutes of our house, so my work is cut out for me. Joanne hikes about 25% of the trails with me - a lot of the trails are steeper or farther than she wants, but she hikes or walks around 35 mi/week as well, she has trails that she does that are more to her preferences.

I volunteer with the local fire department. I have been responding to a few fire and mostly EMT calls. I planned on taking EMT classes this spring, but I decided to hold off on the EMT class until I had more field experience. With my current skills and training, I can be on-scene, administer CPR, etc. so this will give me a chance to figure out whether this is really for me before I spend 4 months of my time and the department's money going to EMT class. I passed the acid test yesterday - my first pediatric call (18 month old). I figure if I can handle that than I can handle most anything else.
I have easily completed 200 hours of fire training since June. I received my Wildland Fire certification and am working on structural fire now. EMT classes would be another 320 hours.
Here is the fire truck that they (shockingly) let me drive!

Since NewYears Eve I have responded to 6 calls, we are surprisingly busy for such a small community. We are the closest winter sports area to Seattle, so many of the calls are for snowmobile accidents (and off-roading in the summer). Picture below is from one of our patient extractions - snowmobilers tend to drink then run into each other, trees and family members, generally quite a way from the pavement. We send in a quad to stabilize and package them up and bring them roadside where they are then transferred to an ambulance. So locating them in the forest and getting them to the road is a major undertaking. Picture below is 2 medics, 1 FF and 2 EMTs heading in to the patient.
20181228_223435.jpg
Here is a better picture of our rescue rig:
20190106_100759.jpg

Mid December I had a 2 day Avalanche Rescue class. We learned how to read pre-avalanche signs, and how to safely enter avalanche prone areas. WA is the number 2 state for avalanche deaths. (CO is #1) We also learned how to conduct searches with and without transponders. Most people that go into avalanche prone areas for snow sports wear transponders. We have transponders for our rescue teams so that if we are responding and there is a second avalanche, we can be recovered. Picture of me below digging out a buried 'body'.

Screen Shot 2018-12-16 at 5.20.53 PM.png

I also volunteer with the National Forest Service in manning a fire lookout. There is no power or running water, and the privy is 200 yards down the mountain, but it is an amazing experience. The average view distance to horizon is 25 miles. Next year I plan on bringing my radio with me!

I do miss San Diego and Red Cross. I haven't done any Red Cross volunteering since arriving, but hope to fix that in the new year. The nearest active chapters are quite a drive, so I need to figure out how to handle that - driving 70 miles for a 2 hour meeting? And as I type that, I think of the SDICC Julian and Imperial members with respect and admiration...
Having worked with a dozen of volunteer organizations both here and San Diego, I can honestly say that SDICC and particularly the Comms Team is the most professional, organized and dedicated volunteer organization ever.

Joanne volunteers at the local library and also serves on the library board. She spends 2 days a week in Seattle with her ailing mother. Joanne is also taking graduate Finance classes at CWU, the local university. Seniors can audit classes for $5 each, which is an incredible deal.

I rented cross country skis for the winter season. We both have snowshoes and have gone out a number of times. There is a 'famous' snowshoe trail across the road from our house. We walk to it, most people I encounter there have driven 2 hours to get there. Seems strange. We bought a treadmill and have been using it to fill in the (surprisingly few) days where inclement weather keeps us from being outdoors.

Wildlife is now part of our daily routine - seeing a bald eagle in the yard is common. We don't even mention seeing deer anymore, unless more than 6 in the group - or fawns, which are always magical. Elk are common further down the valley. Bears are common in the spring/summer, and we have them in the neighborhood regularly enough that I recognize the individual bears. I never expected that day to happen. We take bear spray (thanks Jer!) when walking up to the main road, but I carry (G29) for hiking.

We finally got our whole house backup generator installed. I ended up doing the gas line, concrete pad, and physical install, contracted the electrical hookup, which was the sticking point - construction is booming here and nobody wanted a one-day job. With our 1000 gal propane tank, we should be able to easily run for 2 weeks off grid. I would wager that our house was the only house within 5 miles that didn't have a generator. The power has been down 4-5 times since we arrived, normally < 2 hours, the longest for 10 hours.

Following are some fo my hiking lunch break views, I eat at the finest places! If you are interested in seeing more of my hiking pictures for the area (including bear videos), follow me on Instagram: blackbird508
And you can see our at house weather station with real time reporting at:
