All,
A few of my personal notes from what I learned at an SDG&E public presentation on this topic Spring 2018, these notes mostly came from the Q&A. The most relevant page in the power point Rob forwarded is page 8:

  • along with "back country", power shutoff can/will also affect the wildland urban interface (WUI), those areas that border "open space".  Deep urban dwellers not so much unless a major transmission line is shut down
  • "Patrolled"= inspected.   SDG&E has no other means to determine grid integrity than eye-balls, either in trucks or helicopters
  • a multi-day Santa Ana event (we know what those are like) will postpone the start of inspections until forecast wind conditions are below SDG&E's hazard thresholds
  • along with forecast wind gust thresholds, there are forecast sustained wind thresholds that will hold the start of inspections
  • a three-day Santa Ana event means grid sections that have been turned OFF, will likely not be re-energized until the end of day four at earliest depending on the availability of inspection resources
  • commercial and residential restoration is the lowest priority
  • how many $'s worth of frozen goods will thaw to an unsafe temperature after four days?
  • how many $'s worth of refrigerated goods will warm to an unsafe temperature after four days?
  • if your water source is an on-site well, do you have four days worth of pumped storage?
  • back country fire stations that depend on well water are equally affected. Separately, a Cleveland NF fire captain told me his stations are not equipped with gensets, nor are Cal Fire stations
  • ha! I have solar! Grid-connected solar will be automatically OFF during PSPS events for SDG&E worker safety
IMHO, Santa Ana event prep now includes genset and fuel for four days. ready. set. go.

Thanks Mike - lets hold off a bit and see what turns up.

Not a question of money as much as I hate seeing good stuff go to waste. I recently upgraded all my hard drives in my laptops (six) to SSDs, including replacing one of my smaller SSDs (120GB). Perfectly good Samsung drive with lots of life left in it - I just needed more capacity. It's found a new home in the Toughbook. I'm sure there are other small homeless drives floating around.

What you get for the money these days is amazing. I remember buying 200 MB HDDs for $800 a piece - and that was back when money was worth something.:-)

If someone has a small (120GB) SSD drive they aren't using and are willing to donate it to the team I'll upgrade the other ToughBook. Larger ones are relatively cheap but IMHO overkill for a 2007 vintage computer. If I get more than one drive I'll see about the possibility of upgrading our netbooks or other computers.

Apollo 11 Special Event

Where Were You?

Saturday July 20, 2019 0900 PDT
This Saturday marks the 50th Anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11 on the surface of the moon. Our own Chris Durso, AA4CD, will be operating a Special Event Station from the Kennedy Space Center using the Kennedy Space Center Amateur Radio Club callsign N1KSC (n1ksc.org). AA4CD's operations will commence on the PAPA analog repeater system at 0900 PDT Saturday July 20, 2019.

The KSC club will provide special QSL cards to stations that contact N1KSC to commemorate the Apollo 11 moon landing. Chris will be using IRLP through the AA4CD UHF repeater located on Merritt Island in Florida. This event goes until the date of the splashdown, July 24. Some KSC club members are operating from their home stations and some from the Cape throughout the next two weeks. More details will be available at https://www.n1ksc.org/ soon.

Fun Fact: 50 years ago Chris was at the club station (WB4ICJ) with his father, K4DJN, operating on HF talking to people around the world before and after the launch.
