Re: AREDN a quick report

Hi Mark My new "Mikro-Tik hAP" will be here Monday. My I.T. friend said
he could download the AREDN program, but configuring the
"Tunnel" part may need help. There is an Orange County RACES
drill on Oct 2 that will use AREDN. I will check in on 60 meters
and also send a Winlink VARA message via XE2BNC-10. I would love
to see the AREDN side in action, but there is an ARES VARA P2P
exercise on the same day. I will let you know of my progress in
getting on AREDN/Tunnel. Many thanks for all your help! 73 Bruce Cell; 619-890-0789 WA6DNT@...

I forgot to mention that the only “license” required to operate in the MESH is your ham license. The MESH is not owned by anyone. But it is restricted to use by hams. Third party traffic rules apply just like any other use of ham frequencies.

Re: AREDN a quick report

Hi Bruce, The AREDN mesh operates on ham frequencies. Although your connection will initially be via the Internet, most of the nodes on the other side of that connection are communicating via RF. You can do a lot with just a tunnel abs you can be useful to DST even without a full RF link. For example, you can have an IP phone. Your OOMA device is an IP -based phone device. The concept is nearly the same. You can also send Winlink messages via the MESH. So there’s just a couple of many things you can do. You can read the docs in the Aredenmesh.org for more ideas.

Many thanks for your reply. I can see
that very quickly I will be over my head in this technology. I
looked at the MikroTik.

Re: AREDN a quick report

Hi Bruce,
I recommend you get a Microtik HAP and ask for a tunnel. That way you can "see" what's on the MESH. You can also use your phone as a hot spot in case the Internet goes out - you'll still have access to the MESH and all of its resources which may otherwise be unavailable during a wide scale internet and/or power outage. I am a firm believer that the big cellular companies will be the first to repair their communication systems and/or roll trucks out to areas to provide coverage. You won't be able to expect that kind of service from cable internet and DSL companies. And if you get onto AT&T FirstNet, even if the general cell coverage goes out, you'll still be able to call and get data services. Get this device, flash it with the AREDN firmware and then I'll be happy to provide you with an Internet tunnel: https://www.amazon.com/d/Wireless-Access-Points/MikroTik-Dual-concurrent-Access-Point-RB952Ui-5ac2nD-US/B019PCF3QY/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&qid=1542424142&sr=8-1&keywords=hap+ac+lite&linkCode=sl1&tag=arednmesh-20&linkId=c63c6837b88b3c518c349dea517aea2a&language=en_US Or if you can't figure out the flashing part, we can probably make a deal wherein I buy it for you, configure it and ship it to you pre-configured. ---mark, KM6ZPO

Re: AREDN - there is hope
Mark Warrick (KM6ZPO) <mark@...>
Hey Nat,
I appreciate all the work you're doing to self-teach yourself about AREDN's capabilities. I mentioned a few practical services in previous messages and as you noted, the DOCS on the AREDN site mention quite a few more practical applications. One thing that isn't mentioned though (not sure why) is Faxing over AREDN. I'm not a 100% sure it's 100% legal, so I've asked the community for input in that area in this forum post: https://www.arednmesh.org/content/sending-faxes-t38-legal-through-aredn Nat if you happen to have a Fax machine and an ATA phone adapter, you could try sending me a fax. Search the mesh status page for "fax" to find my IP. I got the Grandstream GS-HT801 single line adapter. In hindsight I wish I had spent a few bucks more and got the GS-HT802 dual port adapter so I could be talking and faxing at the same time. You'll find either of those devices for about $40 on Amazon. I will say that while AREDN is a learn it yourself technology, there is a great amount of support and encouragement from the AREDN community. I started learning AREDN in January. Now I'm an elmer for many people and pretty soon will be implementing it for my local RACES org as well as supporting the mission for American Red Cross. I have some great mentors in the AREDN community who have helped me get up to speed very quickly. ---mark, KM6ZPO

Re: AREDN - there is hope
All, Bruce, Here are some points and hope: · Keith AI6BX manages large AREDN network and will be changing out most AREDN in SD to 5GHz equipment. (Palomar & Otay) · Since AREDN is a LIY (Learn It Yourself organization), it is best to join AREDN (if you already have done so for free) à User account | Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network (arednmesh.org) They have tons of information painstakingly well put together. · So, where to start? Go to the website and look under Docs > AREDN® Documentation — AREDN Documentation 3.21.4.0 documentation (arednmesh.readthedocs.io) I have been warned by the AREDN gurus that no one is going to spoon feed me. Read the documents then ask questions and answer will then be shared. · If someone were interested in securing AREDN compatible radios then MikroTik, Ubiquiti and some other brands with 5GHz radios would be the choice. AREDN SW supports several broad band radios on the market. · Broad band Equipment can be found in many Network online stores: (Read AREDN documents then consult with AREDN gurus first before going shopping) o Here’s what I have and Amazon also sells them > MikroTik LHG 5GHz o Direct buy from MikroTik (costs less but shipping $$) à MikroTik Routers and Wireless - Products o If you want to become a relay node, Sector Antenna isn’t cheap à MikroTik MIMO Sector Antenna
With all that described, here’s the AREDN 5GHz tried and tested result: ü The node to node distance is ~ 10 miles in this test. ü The Equipment is Integrated Dual Polarization ü The AREDN MikroTik broad band equipment I have (see above) was RF Signal abused. Forced to punch through my double Glass window, partially blocked by my Stucco wall, go through trees, obscure by some roof tops. It still works with 17 dB SNR with a drop of 28Mbps down to 19Mbps ü So the fear of having a few trees in the way isn’t applicable at 5GHz at least not a problem with the MikroTik
BTW, Had a head start, was Product management with a Broad Band company in my past existence before retiring.

Hi Mark I am slowly coming to realize that AREDN will never be available on my roof in Mira Mesa, unless there is a node installed on "Black Mt" just NE of me (which currently prevents a path to Palomar). So to learn about this AREDN mode, I will have to go mobile in my Tacoma truck, and drive to some high elevation to get the 5.8 GC signal. Just what would I need to purchase in equipment, to run high speed AREDN mobile and what would I need to set up as an AREDN mobile relay point?? I am sure it would take two very high gain dish antennas, to bridge the long distances as a relay point in San Diego, and also relatively high power 5.8 GC transmitters. So what and how do I order as to manufacture model numbers for AREDN equipment and antennas for long distance point to point communications? I currently know very little about 5.8 GC equipment and antennas as well as the computer side of things. Also how would I "AIM" these dish antennas from a mobile platform, to establish long distance relay communications?? From Cuyamaca Peak these path's out to the desert and back to San Diego would be at least 50 -90 miles. (from my experience with 2.7 GC ITV signal from Mt. AREDN Update 9/16/21
Thank you Keith for the AI6BX-10-RMS-XW-WEST node installation on San Marcos Peak.
Update: · Placed the dish on 2” PVC pipe for stability, still on the window sill. · SNR improved from ~ 16 dB (?) to ~20 dB and Data Rate from 14-19 Mbps to 25-29 Mbps. Will continue to optimize Azimuth and X-Y axis. · Test send from WinLink bounced back because WinLink email Address is not listed in main@ARC2-SDICC.groups.io (might be beneficial to add callsign@... to Groups.io account in case we need to send email from WinLink back out.

I've reached out to Cecil to see if he has any insight to our problem. I checked the PAPA System Slack channel they gave us access to, this is where all their network controllers communicate issues, there are a few repeaters off the network but none the we use were affected. With all the changes Brandmister has been making I'm wondering if its affecting our talkgroup. May try a different talkgroups next week to see if it makes a difference. AREDN Update
Update 9/14/21: AREDN N6BRV-QTH node (View Activity) à N6BRV-QTH mesh status (local.mesh) · Updated the Firmware today 9/13/21 to v 3.21.4.0 · Moving the AREDN dish around (still on the window sill) improved the data Rate from 7.5Mbps to ~14.0 to 19.6Mbps (doubled from 9/13/21) · Using my computer to access the internet via the RF 5GHz link to AI6BX-10-RM5-XW-WEST (Sending this Email from Outlook) · Testing WinLink connectivity.
I’ve been told that FCC is taking away some 2.4 and 3.4 GHz and that San Diego county AREDN mesh is undergoing transition to 5.8 GHz There are some AREDN mesh nodes that seem to be active in Southern District. Not sure if they are useful: · N0MIS (RF path through Clairmont Mesa Blvd) à N0MIS-FDCCU150 mesh status (local.mesh) Location: 32.785328 -117.029503 · K6IRF à K6IRF-HARPUSA-HAP-AC mesh status (local.mesh) Location: 34.081260 -117.713862
I believe ARC head quarters has an AREDN on the roof probably talking to Palomar 3.4 GHz node (not sure).
