ARC Wilderness First Aid/CPR/AED

Hi. Has anyone taken the ARC Wilderness First Aid/CPR/AED class ($$$)? Don't see it on syllabus. I took it with the BSA High Adventure last, already expired.

A really good practical class (required in some) for Hikers, Sailors, Adventures when Emergency Response time > 1-3+ hours. DST team maybe be exposed to similar situations?

Hi Nat,

I have not taken that course, but if I had the $$$ burning a hole in my pocket I would.  It's valuable information.  But honestly, there's plenty of wilderness training info available online you can review for free.  You just gotta dig for it.

I'm a pretty avid outdoorsman.  I do mountain bike tours in some fairly remote areas (i.e. deep in the mountains, desert areas, etc.).  My wife and I got our ham licenses initially to fill a communication need that was not served well with cell phone service and GMRS.  Before we got ham radios, we considered satellite-based messengers and phones.  I can tell you that that had we gone the satellite route, it would have filled in the gap and we would have saved thousands of dollars in what has become a rather intense hobby.  BUT, on the other hand, had I not gotten into ham radio, I wouldn't be here.  I've invested countless hours into learning radio comms to append the thousands of hours I have spent in the great outdoors.

You're right Nat in stating that help may not arrive for hours even if you have quick communications.  And if you happen to be in the great outdoors when a major disaster strikes a metropolitan area, you're gonna be on your own for quite a long time.  I definitely recommend courses like the wilderness first aid training and more intensive training in survival skills.

Nat,

I took the class in 2012 before going on my second Philmont trek.  When I took the class, it was 2 days long (16 hours).  I don't remember what the cost was and I booked through BSA San Diego/Imperial Council not the Red Cross.  The instructor if I recall was an American Red Cross instructor.  I believe the card was only good for 2 years.

Also you had to have a current First Aid and CPR card from an accredited source before you were allowed to take the class.

Thanks Fred and Mark,
Took mine in 2016 through BSA too.  Recalled it was $60 so well worth.  Since we're ARC, thought someone knew direct ARC class offerings, I might have missed.

Yes, I recall now. They require a regular Adult/child CPR first to append to certification. The classes are usually packed sardine full (LOL) And have to be BSA member too (BSA merit badge Counselor in my case). If you don't need the accreditation please refrain from booking the class.

It's called WRFA. I have the link (text me privately)

If there's high demand, maybe our ARC training staff could put a WRFA class together. Hope Bob KG6RGI can shine some light on this.
